    to design an ultimate information machine that will store any kind of information which is retrievable within reasonable time by any user in a natural way There should exist no technological constraint on the size of the store on its physical location on the kind of the medium nor on the style of communication The database communmity shares the view that a similarly high degree of conceptualisation and formalisation which has been established and is being exploited for current database management can also be achieved across the whole range of novel information structures The IDOMENEUS consortium is convinced that such achievements are necessary to guide technology development for the next generation of well integrated highly optimised and robust user friendly commercially successful multimedia information environments STRUCTURE IDOMENEUS provides services and structures for European IT industry and research and transfers reuses and extends the related technology As a result IDOMENEUS expects a substantial improvement of Europe s position in the market of next generation information envionments with their high demands in user friendliness and system interoperability efficiency and robustness as well as openness for a multiplicity of media ACTIVITIES Several European IT industry and information systems user groups have already expressed

    example logics in the context of object oriented approaches to data models and storage structures within which new retrieval models can be described implemented and tested The investigations of new retrieval models based on formal logic and a theory of uncertainty will address the claim that retrieval can be viewed as a form of inference To produce convincing evidence of the practical viability of the work the Group will study the scaleability and performance characteristics of models and designs for very large multimedia information bases A major feature of the approach is that IR systems must be constructed to be adaptive to user interaction from the beginning Such a process of adaptation will be useable only if thought is given to the design of appropriate user interfaces supporting the multimedia information seeking and browsing activities of users Hence the partners in their research will emphasise the relationship between user interfaces and the formal models ACTIVITIES Activities will be focused on four main themes the modelling of retrieval run time support for information retrieval human computer interaction and evaluation techniques Meetings will be held on specific topics and a plenary workshop convened on the research activity of all the participants Representatives from industry will be invited to attend the workshop and to evaluate the lines of research and the results produced If specific topics are found to be of special interest or relevance the Group will organise appropriate workshops An e m distribution list has been already set up for the fast dissemination of information among Group partners POTENTIAL The cooperation between the research groups involved in this project will promote or reinforce new research areas related to multimedia information retrieval At first it will greatly facilitate the integration of the multiple aspects of the problem and the corresponding approaches within

    TUC MUSIC Σταύρος Χριστοδουλάκης Πληροφορίες Έργου Περιγραφή Έργου Publishing a modern paper or electronic edition of an ancient document is expensive the source is often not easily accessible and must be handled with great care often in situ and the publication is often required in several versions such as a facsimile edition a modern typeset version a translation an annotated version etc In addition very often the material is not published alone but as part of a set or compendium The core idea of MINERS is the notion of an editorial platform An editorial platform contains all the background material extracted from a set of documents organised in a sophisticated and highly structured fashion An editorial platform cannot be read by end users as such but it can be used by both authors and publishers for further publishing tasks A typical publishing task could be a traditional book about the ancient documents another task might be an electronic hypertext in Italian another a French book incorporating only a few sections of the ancient material available a further task might be an online database of documents and yet another a CD I interactive CD All these publishing efforts could be accomplished using the editorial platform or more than one platform without any need to physically access the original material The editorial platform provides a number of advantages greater availability of the ancient material to authors and therefore to the public reduction of the time required for new publishing traditional or electronic and reduction of costs Another important factor to consider is that the investment required to create editorial platforms will pay dividends for a very long time as the relevance of ancient documents is not subject to transient cultural fashions The MINERS project is developing the model and the tools required

    at creating a set of tools to allow a reader to access via a hypertext interface a large body of information managed by external possibly pre existing databases either relational or multimedia The major output of the project was a set of tools to allow a reader to access via a hypertext interface a large body of information managed by external possibly pre existing databases either relational or multimedia has been created The approach was based on using a model based description mapping of the hypertext application defined in a declarative and or operational style that translates hypertext operations search queries and navigation into operations on the underlying information base and also materializes hypertext objects of the underlying databases A suitable model was also developed for multimedia information in order to define the mapping by abstracting from strict implementation considerations A repository was used as an active dictionary storing the model based schema description of the interface application the schemas of the interfaces databases and the mapping between the two During the configuration phase such definitions are extracted off line from the repository and made available to the execution tools in a suitable format Methodologies to support the hypertext interface
