    centralized services accessed over a network are now gaining rapidly in popularity and diffusion Such services have certain clear advantages They are available on demand offer an indefinitely large subject domain and are continuously updated They also enable users to access transaction services and products can be viewed evaluated and purchased immediately Technologies for storing organizing searching and presenting multimedia data for use in multimedia applications as well as design methodologies for the easy and cost effective development of multimedia applications are still in their infancy Furthermore at the moment these technologies are far from being integrated and standardised This lack of integration and standardisation has a number of negative implications First of all the development of the different components of a multimedia interactive on line service means that it is necessary to use packages devices and tools that do not have simple common interfaces the burden of putting the various constituents together is thus left completely to the application programmer who must explicitly configure the different modules and implement their common interaction and communication features Secondly both the resulting product and the individual components have a very low degree of portability and reuse Thirdly different but semantically interrelated on

    records historical documents of the National Archives of Greece iconographic collections of sketches drawings and maps of Crete preserved by the Marciana Library of Venice such as the journal of the War of Candia 1637 1669 documents from the Record Office of Vienna documents e g manuscripts from the Library of Chania The major technical objective of the project is to integrate different technologies into a single system These include such technologies as geographically distributed databases MINERS hypermedia interfaces full text retrieval systems World Wide Web and Internet Publishing The system that will be formed will be capable of providing access to the virtual archive contents locally or via Internet A set of value added services e g Internet publications 3D reconstructions of Venetian monuments guided tours etc will also be offered In order to provide services both locally and on the information providers libraries and archives premises the tools that will be developed in the context of the project will be used More precisely the major project objectives are Realization of a distributed virtual archive consisted of a number of sub archives each sub archive will represent an Information Provider which will be in the context of VENIVA a library or an archive Implementation of tools that will permit The provision of reading room services locally for each sub archive These services will be provided by Internal Service Providers who will develop and maintain the applications installed on the Information Provider premises and will include creation and maintenance of the database for the archive or the library provision of indexing mechanisms and navigation mechanisms for the contents of the database and provision of the capability to naive users of accessing from home the archive or library database contents The provision of a set of value added services Internet and

    Έργου The MILLION project aims to realise a consumer oriented system for developing the tourist potential of European cities by providing communications based services to a significant sample of people of some geographic areas and by giving visibility to the tourist offers of involved areas to the largest possible community of networked users the Internet MILLION assumes as a starting point the phenomenon of civic networking in progress in several cities in the EU as in Bologna and in Venice and aims at building a system which makes possible to pass from giving civic information for free to the citizens to giving services for payment to the consumers first of all in the tourism field Communication services to be provided can so be grouped into two main categories information services given by agencies promoting tourism and by Local Authorities for free information and transaction based services given by private providers for payment The whole application will be developed as an enhanced and integrated World Wide Web application on standard platforms using both existing and new hardware and software technologies Access through advanced presentation systems with integrated tools will be available on all major industry standard platforms and mobile devices such

    the so called Virtual Museum The technology used for the implementation of the server will be derived from a massively parallel processing system technology design with an outstanding price performance ratio for embedded supercomputing applications in industrial environments The data access and management layer used for the retrieval of information will implement the emerging DAVIC Digital Audio Visual Council standard The server will be installed within two international museums and used for in house applications as well as for remote access from other museums building a pan European cultural network in this way In the final phase of the project the server will be installed within public networks making it possible to access the information from other public places and from private homes Thus the efficiency of the server and its basic software layer as well as the functionality of the generic application will be demonstrated and validated by several trials providing a realistic testbed The efficiency will also be investigated by simulations using synthetic and realistic workload measured in former trials Project Achievements and Progress The SICMA project started on September 95 The first version of the server and application prototypes will be ready on November 96 As it concerns the data management server the following features are already supported Modelling of MPEG 2 video audio streams and support for direct access to video frames by using a frame index support for parallel placement and retrieval of video units real time scheduling of delay sensitive requests support of VoD applications with standard VCR functionality HTML document modelling and support for accessing these documents via a WWW browser Access methods for text and information retrieval functionality for text For the access management layer which follows the DAVIC 1 0 standard the following are supported The Service Gateway Service Element which

    flexible on demand telematics based distance learning and training services in the market A Modular Training System IDEALS MTS will be developed and a European wide network of Local Training Centres LTCs will be established The Modular Training System will allow cost effective co authoring of courses and flexible cost effective learning for users The IDEALS project will enhance the results of the DEDICATED project 3rd Framework Programme and transform them into marketable products In IDEALS the Modular Training System will be enhanced to support multiple users at the same time Courseware will be stored in a distributed database can be enriched by using real time simulations microworlds Support will be provided for course authoring learning and tutoring The Local Training Centres are interconnected to provide a uniform courseware domain with European wide access Different forms of networking will be tested like modems ISDN Internet and satellite links IDEALS will be demonstrated and evaluated in pilots for Institutes of Higher Education and SMEs In the Institutes of Higher Education Pilot Technische Hochschule Darmstadt Germany University of Oulu Finland and Universidade de Coimbra Portugal will jointly create courseware on the topic Fundamentals of Computer Graphics by using tools for co operative authoring and on line communication These institutes are connected via terrestrial links and satellite The resulting courseware will afterwards be used in their lecturing activities Students about 200 in total can access this courseware in computer labs at their university electronic classroom as well as at home home learning Remote tutoring and group learning will be supported In the SME Pilot seven courseware providers will jointly create courseware on the topics Parametric Design Telematics Usage and Quality Management Customised versions of these courses are delivered to approximately 20 SMEs The SMEs in rural areas in Portugal are connected to the
