    system which closes the loop between observation interpretation planning and action commonly found in UxV robotics smart vehicle technologies automated industrial machineries and ONR s autonomic computing Real time autonomic cyber system requires timely and accurate decision making and adaptive planning Autonomic decision making understands its own state and the perceived state of its environment It is capable of anticipating changes and future states and projecting the effects of actions into future states Understanding of current state and the knowledge model of the world are needed for extrapolating actions and deriving action plans Humans have gut feeling fast and shallow reasoning and reflexive actions and deliberative thinking slower and deeper reasoning and deliberate actions Models of how these two systems of intelligence interact with each other have been proposed for human decision making e g the two systems model by Daniel Kahneman These interacting models could inspire approaches for machine reasoning in autonomic cyber and cyber physical systems Methods are being developed for merging statistical inference and formal reasoning by merging their knowledge a unified representation An alternative method ONR is promoting took the direction where statistical inference and formal reasoning systems live side by side and interact prompt inform

    growth wireless networks are increasingly employing heterogeneous radio access technologies and diverse deployment methodologies These methodologies include macro micro pico and femtocells as well as ad hoc device to device peer to peer and cognitive radio networks in licensed and unlicensed bands Traffic optimization and spectrum allocation techniques such as WiFioffload and carrier aggregation are also in development for capacity and data rate enhancements In addition multiple input multiple output MIMO techniques are a key technology component for these current and future wireless networks Besides its substantial gain in point to point communications MIMO technology has a greater potential in multi user networks by exploiting spatial and multi user diversity In this talk we will discuss recent advances in network and terminal solutions to address these challenges Βιογραφικό Ομιλητή George Chrisikos is responsible for advanced technology development at Qualcomm Inc and has been working in the research design and development of communication systems and algorithms for wireless satellite and wireline applications As the Engineering Director and systems Product Manager at AWR Inc he was responsible for architecting and leading the development of a simulation technology product that gained widespread adoption by the wireless communication industry worldwide He has been responsible for the design of semiconductor chipsets such as CDMA and WLAN and advanced satellite systems for commercial and government sectors He is involved with IEEE 3GPP 3GPP2 GNSS and broadcast standards Dr Chrisikos is a Fellow of the IEEE and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer He has been an invited speaker at various corporations and conferences worldwide has authored numerous patents published papers in international journals and conferences and contributed to textbooks He is currently serving as the IEEE Communications Society Standards Board Technical Committee Liaison for the Radio Communications Committee on the IEEE Eric E Sumner Award Committee and on

    inadequate or insufficient to meet the needs of scientific applications the scientific community typically uses special purpose legacy software When compared to a general purpose DBMS however application specific systems require more resources to maintain and in order to achieve acceptable performance they often sacrifice data independence and hinder the reuse of knowledge With the exponential growth of dataset sizes data management technology are no longer luxury they are the sole solution for scientific applications I will discuss some of the work from teams around the world and the requirements of their applications as well as how these translate to challenges for the data management community As an example I will describe a challenging application on brain simulation data and its needs I will then present how with a novel indexing algorithm and some other techniques we were able to simulate a meaningful percentage of the human brain as well as access arbitrary brain regions fast independently of increasing data size or density Finally I will present some of the challenges that lie ahead in the brain simulation and in other applications Σύντομο Βιογραφικό Anastasia Natassa Ailamaki is a Professor of Computer Sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne
