  • Taj Hotel, Boston: Taj Hotel, Boston- Travel Video PostCard
Boston s fine boutique Hotel dedicated to quality and service attracting people from all over the world The Taj still occupies the prime location over looking Boston Garden The cobalt blue chandeliers remain in the special events dining hall and high tea is still a weekend favorite at the Taj Weddings at the Taj will always be magical and lovingly prepared The Ritz was always a magnet for dignitaries and starsThe dining room is filled with photos of such luminaries as Winston Churchill Shirley Temple Rogers and Hammerstein In that sense the Taj is unchanged from the Ritz Carlton The Fighter star Christian Bale stayed here while filming and the president of Lithuania was due in days after we left There are a few more Indian staffers though the service staff still comes from around the world The welcoming TV screen features a scion of the Tata family more or less in local dress talking about the romance of India and the quality of the Taj hotels Patrick Blangy Director of Sales and Marketing of The Taj Boston says that many people still come because they remember the hotel as the Ritz But he adds they are coming increasingly because of the Taj brand and of course our great location across from the Boston Garden and on Newbury Street There are plans Blangy says to integrate further the cultural and aesthetic characteristics of India into the US based properties but he says these plans are in development and reassures that the cultural additions with be tasteful and subtleUp scale rooms still offer spectacular views of the Boston Garden across the street but guests there are treated to an astonishing elegantly carved elephant a symbol of India caparisoned in pure chocolate The service is as first class as we remember it to be in the days of the Ritz Carlton an opinion apparently shared by a majority of consumer reviews Searching TripAdvisor Yelp Boston Yahoo with very few exceptions the reviews were exceptional None noted a significant difference between a stay at yesterday s Ritz Carlton and today s Taj and all strongly suggest getting a room facing the fabled Boston Gardens What did surprise me was how accommodating the Taj is to families many of whom I saw milling about the lobby I overheard at least one request for a crib graciously acknowledged by the staff The piano and player are gone from the clubby bar and that s probably an improvement And since it s Cigar days are long gone it aims to be a little more female Friendly Four and a half years later there are those who wish the Ritz Carlton was never sold but nothing in the reality of a Taj stay justifies that There is some still competition from the Four Seasons the Mandarin Oriental and smaller intimate hotels that spring up frequently in the reinvented Boston so The Taj will have to stay on top of its game to stay competitive and we strongly

  • Southampton, New York- The Southampton Inn: Southampton TVP
a warm and accessible woman makes it clear that while she has her share of the rich and famous staying with her hers is a place where ordinary mortals can come to gawk or simply enjoy the lovely flowers organic food intimate dining patios I really want people to be able to just be themselves she says It helps of course that the Inn offers a free shuttle bus down First Neck Lane en route to what has been voted the Number 1 Beach in America Coopers Beach And the shuttle is a good thing because the beach is also the most expensive to park 45 bucks a day But it s a gorgeous place wide smooth seemingly endless sand and coast and apparently one can see the turrets of Calvin Klein s mansion from the beach The inn also gets that people hate leaving their pets behind so management just declared that twelve rooms out of 90 are pet friendly so for an extra 39 00 bucks a day Fido can share your room with you I especially felt at home in the Kids Room a bright fun big room with lots of stuffed animals happy wall lights lots of crayons and stuffed things sitting in chairs Many play areas have a forced feel to them but this felt just right While the inn appeals to families and say family reunions and the like it does a brisk business in business meetings and weddings with many many guests coming I suspect for the cache of The Hamptons The restaurant named by the way after the inn s big black cat Oso Spanish for bear is pretty complete with a children s menu and a tiny colorful table for little diners What works well is that teens staying here can

12 by 14 foot space the gentleman reader was one P J Murphy reading from James Joyce s Ulysses To his customers This is Dublin New Media Travel http www newmediatravel com and Travel Video PostCard http www youtube com traveelvideo think Dublin is a terrific city to photograph On the counter of Sweny s were bars of lemon soap because this was the original store where Leopold Bloom bought his Perhaps producing such literary lions as Joyce George Bernard Shaw Brendan Behan Samuel Becket and even Jonathan Swift of Gulliver s Travels has made Dublin a city of witty funny clever people As I experienced them Dubliners are some of the most natural open people I ve ever met with no attitudes whatsoever Not at all my experience in other other European capitals say Paris or Rome It s a kinetic place with good energy a place where young and old male and female mix comfortably with each other comfortable with who they are and how they look One has to respect the Irish and the ways they maintain their warmth and humor in the face of recent national tragedies and present day real economic woes like 16 per cent unemployment A tour of the Kilmainham Gaol for example is very sobering This horrifically cramped dark and depressing place was where the British executed 14 leaders of the short lived Irish Easter Uprising in 1916 a drive by the Irish for independence from Britain and brutally put down And during the terrible Irish famine 1845 1850 children as young as five and six were sent here with their families to hard labor Their crimes Begging Stealing a loaf of bread Or coming from families in debt their tiny farm plots ruined by the potato blight Not that these memories

  • Kilmainham Jail, Dublin, Ireland: Kilmainham Travel Video Postcard
a very significant tourist destination Kilmainham was built in 1796 and it was here that debtors petty thieves and children as young as 5 were imprisoned As were those who fought for over 100 yearsto free Ireland of British occupation Many were executed The most REVERED perhaps were the14 who lead the failed Easter rising in 1916 Joseph Plunkett whose sweetheart Grace Gifford persuaded the keepers to allow them to marry in the prison chapel was executed the day after his weddingAt Kilmainham there was no segregation of prisoners men women and children were incarcerated up to 5 in each cell with only a single candle for light and heat most of their time was spent in the cold and the dark The candle had to last the prisoner for two weeks Its cells were roughly 28 meters squared The poor conditions in which women prisoners were kept at Kilmainham provided the spur for the next stage of development Remarkably for an age that prided itself on a protective attitude for the weaker sex the conditions for women prisoners were persistently worse than for men As early as his 1809 report the Inspector had observed that male prisoners were supplied with iron bedsteads while females lay on straw on the flags in the cells and common halls Half a century later there was little improvement The women s section located in the west wing remained overcrowded Wendie Hansen Sakakeeny is a travel writer photographer and videographer one of the developers of Travel Video Postcards as well as a respected Boston Voice Over Talent The first woman to narrate a Nova for PBS she is a regular descriptive narrator for WGHB Boston and the first to automate the New England Telephone system she can be reached at wendiestvp gmail com Show
