  • The first "Final Four"
Tel Aviv They won 81 73 in Athens and they flew to Israel Arriving at the legendary Yad Eliyahu Arena they saw that there was still work in progress in order to put a roof The Israelis answered to Panathinaikos worries that the arena would be ready on time for the game And they were proven right It was the first game played in Yad Eliyahu Arena with a roof Maccabi Tel Aviv won the game 81 80 but it was not enough Greens advanced to the next round Getting to the semifinals Panathinaikos was at the same group with Lier Belgium Yugoplastika Split ex Yugoslavia and Slavia Prague ex Czechoslovakia Things were complicated enough in the group reaching the two last days In the first game against Slavia in Prague the teams got to a tie 74 74 and just five players played the whole game for Panathinaikos The Greens got the lead 45 38 at halftime they led by 4 one minute before the end 74 70 with Kefalos scoring from the free throw line but the hosts tied the game with Amer and Ruzicka The whole delegation was waiting impatiently at the hotel for the result of the other game between Lier and Jugoplastika Back in days without mobile phones or internet At one point the coach of the team Kostas Mourouzis was asked at the reception desk After hours of waiting everybody expected just a word from Mourouzis He didn t speak a word He just raised his hand forming a V with his fingers It was enough The team began celebrating knowing that they needed to typically seal their place in the semifinals in Athens The second game started at zero since the first game was a tie Panathinaikos was determined to get the victory

  • First ever European win anniversary!
one which had an array of great names on its roster What he recalls the most is the magical atmosphere at the Kallimarmaro stadium It was an entirely different deal back then Each game hosted 30 40 000 people In order for us to be able to reach the locker rooms we would enter from the northern side the side where Ardittos is The locker rooms where there And in order to exit the stadium we would have to go through a portico And when you would step foot out on the stadium it was a truly unique feeling All the stadium s lights would be dimmed and only the lights which illuminated the court would remain lit And although there were thousands of people in reality we were unable to see them All we could do was hear hear the echoes the voices coming from quite a different fans stand Everything was so different Panathinaikos was up against a very tough team also bearing the title of the favorite Then Romanian basketball was flourishing Steaua was a strong team and had many international players on its roster But we always knew what we were after stepping out on court Don t go thinking that there were any frenzy celebrations upon the occasion of qualifying Back then we had specific places where we used to hang out stresses Tassos Stefanou a man who for 56 years has been walking side by side with Panathinaikos There were two places where we used to go Thraka on Fokionos street and Virinis in Pangrati Our wins but our losses also used to be hosted at one of these two places Administration coaches all of the players used to meet up there after the game The same thing had happened that night also after

  • A game from times past: 20/1/1963, Panathinaikos – Real Madrid
course One of those two reasons had to do with weather phenomena The intense rain that had fallen during the previous couple of days had created several problems and a lake amidst the court area Several people including kids who were then playing for the Panathinaikos academies rushed to help and use cloth and every other means possible to dry out the court Tassos Stefanou the BSA general manager today was one of those people We were at the arena for two days we were all doing everything we could in order for the court to be in a proper state Cloths buckets everything and everyone had been pulled together to make it but we were doing this not as a chore but to help as much as we could in our own way Amidst all this the position of the benches had to change too For the first time instead of being opposite the stands they had to be toward the side of the stands Why Well here comes the second reason that made this a special game Juan Carlos and Sofia had informed organizers that they would attend the game Thus armchairs were placed on the opposite side of the stands in order for them to sit and some other dignitary with them too This visit brought special publicity to the game Journalists and photographers of the time rushed to the Hindu s Tomb A basketball game managed to become front page news in every printed press publication of the time and gained a spot in radio shows and films of those days It was good publicity for the sport although the result was not optimum The game started with Panathinaikos trying and up until half time managing to have a good and competitive performance against a superpower
