    13 Thoukydidou St a unique example of the architecture of the Ottoman period which has been fully restored by the National Bank of Greece Members of the first Board of Directors of the Foundation were Ioannis Kakridis Pandelis Prevelakis Linos Politis Angelos Vlachos Ambassador Leonidas Philippides Rector of the University of Athens and Konstantinos Tsatsos President of the Academy of Athens Emmanuel Ch Kasdaglis writer distinguished editor and employee of the National Bank became the Foundation s Director Between May 1966 and April 1967 the Board of Directors planned the Foundation s activities for the following years This bright start was cut short by the military coup and the ambitious programme was only put into effect following the restoration of Democracy since the colonels dictatorship had ousted the Foundation s Director and high handedly replaced the members of the Board of Directors who had not resigned The Cultural Foundation of the National Bank or MIET Morfotiko Idryma Ethnikis Trapezis as it is generally known commenced its activities in 1974 when Georgios Mavros then Deputy Prime Minister of Greece restored order to the Foundation through legislation reinstating the pre dictatorial Board and the dismissed Director E Ch Kasdaglis who held that position until his death in March 1998 In 1995 the Academy of Athens awarded the Foundation a Silver Medal for its total contribution to the cultural life of Greece for over thirty years it has successfully supported Science the Fine Arts and Letters by publishing exhibiting and translating many notable works The Foundation s activity in the Humanities commenced in late 1974 with its publications which according to its articles of association are intended to cover university teaching requirements as well as gaps in the Greek language bibliography Since then MIET selects and publishes works that cannot be undertaken by commercial printing houses because of the high costs or other special reasons Many of the Foundation s 300 or so publications are used as text books in higher education However MIET consistently aims to satisfy also the common readers regardless of age or social status who wish to be educated or to expand their knowledge in any of the fields covered by the Foundation s publication programme The Foundation s publications are outstanding for the apt selection of titles and their excellent quality and have rightfully earned the recognition of both Greek and international readers Its books are written and translated by specialist scholars while their exemplary editing has set the highest standards and has contributed to improving the quality of Greek book production generally Moreover the Foundation extends its impressive contribution to the fields of Fine Arts and Sciences through the continuous enrichment of its collection of works of art and the organization of exhibitions the management of three major cultural centres in Athens Thessaloniki and Patras the Cartography Archive of Greek Regions the Historical and Palaeographical Archive and the model Paper Conservation Laboratory the management of the Alexis Minotis Bequest in Memory of Katina Paxinou the organization of

    the Diomidis Building at 146 Tritis Septemvriou Street in Athens The archive material is particularly significant from a historical point of view as it covers the period from 1841 to 1966 consisting of the records of NBG as well as of other legal entities and individuals whether original records or copies of them that have come into its possession The NBG Historical Archive s mission is to identify collect safeguard process and exhibit all the documents relating to the establishment operation and growth of NBG as well as the role it has played since its establishment to the present day in the economic social and cultural life of Greece In accordance with this mission the Historical Archive is the trustee of the Bank s archival documents and collections with the exception of the Bank s art collection which constitute today one of the richest sources of information for the history of the modern Greek state The Historical Archive s work is aimed at three groups of the community The academic scientific community The resources contained in the Historical Archive have been processed and stored using state of the art archival and reproduction technologies This material is today easily accessible to the scientific community in a variety of formats including digital School university students Since 2005 the Historical Archive has systematically aspired to bring students of primary and secondary schools and universities in touch with primary information sources so that young people can learn about the Archive s ability to generate and unravel information of many kinds and be able to judge critically the authenticity of the information that reaches them The public The NBG Historical Archive aims at giving the public the chance to get to know the archival material and other collections that can be visited and studied Accordingly the Historical Archive undertakes a variety of initiatives and actions including Exhibitions permanent and temporary Publications Conferences and Colloquiums Cultural Activities including participation in the International Museum Day Research Programmes Educational and Training Programmes Provision of Know how and Technical Expertise Last since the early 1990s the Historical Archive has been a member of the European Association of Banking History EABH and is co founder of the Institute of Corporate Culture Affairs ICCA established in 2004 by both NBG and Deutsche Bank The NBG Historical Archive is also a member of the International Council on Archives ICA of the International Council of Museums ICOM and of the Network of Museums and Cultural Institutions of the Athens Historical Centre Address NBG Historical Archive Megaro Diomidi Tritis Septemvriou 146 112 51 Tel 210 8807804 Fax 210 8807787 E mail ha nbg ethnodata gr http ha nbg gr Opening hours Reception and reading room Monday to Friday 09 00 14 00 Archive material delivered to readers Monday to Friday 09 00 12 30 Exhibition opening times for the public Monday Tuesday 10 00 13 00 Wednesday Thursday 17 00 20 00 Actions of the Historical Archive 2012 Previous years The Bank History Financial
