    enterprise The focal exhibit is the reconstructed face of an anonymous 11 year old Athenian girl who was along with Perikles one of the tens of thousands victims of typhoid fever in the year 430 BC the second year of the Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta and their allies This exhibition was made possible thanks to the generous offer of the dental specialist Dr Manolis Papagrigorakis Senior Professor at the Medical School of the Athens University following a fruitful collaboration with the National Archaeological Museum Athens This exhibition was recently on display at the Goulandis Museum of Natural History We feel that the National Archaeological Museum Athens is the ideal setting par excellence to display Myrtis Her reception within the walls of our institution where so many burial sculptures and funerary reliefs are held recalls the ancient ritual practice of Dexiosis whereby the right hand is extended in a gesture of farewell to the dead The encounter of Myrtis with the youths and maidens on burial stelai at the Museum Dikaios Nikocharis Aristille or Mnesagora is metaphysical Through the face of little Myrtis sepulchral monuments and memorials of the 5th century BC both eponymous or anonymous come back to

    Mende Methone Dikaia South Italy and Sicily Pithekoussai Cumae Zankle The objects exhibited in this section shed light on the first settlement the prosperity of the city in the Geometric period the commerce and colonies as well as the development of the alphabetical writing system The second section concentrates on topics related to the city s everyday life Following a period of recession during the 5th century B C as a result not only of the Persian wars but also of its opposition to Athenian domination the city is reorganized and flourishes during the 4th century B C New public buildings as well as luxurious private houses are built substantiating the city s well being Public life is presented through exhibits connected to the function of the Agora the Stoai and the Gymnasia On the other hand private life is represented by architectural remains of houses household utensils as well as groups of objects related to marriage women s life children and domestic cult practices The religious life of the Eretrians is reflected in the cults and sanctuaries that have been located and researched The patron god of Eretria was Apollo Daphnephoros whose sanctuary underwent successive phases of reconstruction from the end of the 8th century onwards Apart from the sanctuary of Apollo the exhibits are also linked to the sanctuaries of Athena Artemis Demeter Thesmophorion and the North Sacrificial area The finds from the Iseion also confirm that the worship of the Egyptian goddess Isis was the main foreign worship of the city while the cuirassed statues from the Sebasteion bear witness to the emperors worship during Roman times The last section touches upon topics of death and afterlife through the presentation of the necropoleis graves and grave offerings The burial customs vary according to the time period the

    έχει αναγνωριστεί ο Απόλλων του τύπου Belvedere ρωμαϊκό αντίγραφο ενός πρωτότυπου έργου του 330 π Χ ίσως του Αθηναίου γλύπτη Λεωχάρη η Ηρα με κεφαλή στον τύπο της Ηρας Ludovisi ρωμαϊκού έργου του 40 μ Χ ο Αποξυόμενος ρωμαϊκό αντίγραφο ενός πρωτότυπου έργου του 320 π Χ του Σικυώνιου γλύπτη Λυσίππου το σύμπλεγμα της Ειρήνης και του Πλούτου ρωμαϊκό αντίγραφο ενός πρωτότυπου έργου του 370 π Χ του Κηφισοδότου του Πρεσβυτέρου πατέρα του Πραξιτέλη και ο Άρης του τύπου Borghese ρωμαϊκό αντίγραφο ενός πρωτότυπου έργου του 420 400 π Χ ίσως του Αθηναίου γλύπτη Αλκαμένη Μετά το τέλος του Β Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου τρία από τα έξι αγάλματα η Δήμητρα ο Αποξυόμενος και ο Άρης απομακρύνθηκαν λόγω φθοράς Τα άλλα τρία παρέμειναν στην αρχική θέση τους ενώ τη θέση του Αποξυομένου κατέλαβε το πήλινο αντίγραφο του αγάλματος του Διαδουμένου αθλητή ρωμαϊκού αντιγράφου ενός πρωτότυπου έργου του 430 π Χ του Αργείου γλύπτη Πολυκλείτου Αυτό το πήλινο έργο προερχόταν από τον διάκοσμο της επίστεψης του Ιλίου Μελάθρου οικία Schliemann Έκτοτε το στηθαίο κοσμούσαν τέσσερα αγάλματα ο Απόλλων η Ήρα ο Διαδούμενος και η Ειρήνη με τον Πλούτο Μετά το σεισμό του Σεπτεμβρίου του 1999 τα τέσσερα εκείνα πήλινα αγάλματα απομακρύνθηκαν λόγω φθορών
