  • Nafplio
he reached as far as Larissa in 1204 Further advancement was curtailed by the crusaders of the 4th crusade who seized all the lands he had conquered including Nauplion between 1210 and 1212 From then on Nauplion went through a series of occupations first the Franks then the Venetians followed by the Ottoman Turks who lost control to the Venetians for a short while before retaking the city Bourtzi The city of Nauplion or the Napoli di Romania as it was named by the Venetians took shape during the first Venetian occupation when towards the end of the 15th century artificial banks were built into the sea to form the lower city Today this area is regarded as the historical centre of the modern city Until that time habitation had only been possible on the rock of the Acronauplia Other notable works of the period are the Castello di Toro and the Bourtzi In 1540 after a three year siege Nauplion surrendered to the Turks During the first Turkish occupation of the city which lasted from 1540 to 1686 Nauplion seems to have enjoyed special rights and privileges especially towards the middle of the 17th century In fact it became the capitol of the Peloponnesus and the headquarters of the Turkish commander Mora Pasha Palamidi In 1686 the Venetians lead by the highly capable general Francesco Morosini b and hold onto it for the short period until 1715 Nauplion became a very important city during this period as the capitol of the Morean kingdom The greatest work carried out during the second Venetian occupation is without doubt the Fort of Palamidi The second and harsher Turkish occupation began in 1715 and the city began to fall into decline especially after the headquarters of the Pasha were moved to Tripoli According to the descriptions of foreign travellers of the time the city was mostly occupied by Turks and a few Christians who were restricted to the Psaromachalas area Many homes were abandoned the harbour filled with rubbish and the stench was unbearable On the night of 29th November in 1822 after many months of siege the Palamidi fell to the Greeks as the result of a surprise attack led by Staikos Staikopoulos From then on the city began to develop at great speed and crowds of refugees flooded in from the surrounding areas that were still under the yoke of Turkish rule The situation in the city is elegantly brought to life by Dimitrios Vyzantios in his popular play Babylon which is set in Nauplion in 1827 The city reached the peak of its glory when it became the capitol of the Greek state from 1827 to 1834 On the 8th January 1828 the first governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias alighted at Nauplion The city was full of cafes and in the salons of notable local families there were balls and literary soirees A printing press was established and for a short while there was a reading room Philellinon Square On

on the ruins of which has been built the Holy Monastery and the Roman aqueduct which supplied it with water from Nafplio are evidence leaving no doubt that the area of Aria had attracted residents long before the earliest historical reference In the Venetian years when the first relevant historical recordings appear Aria was a suburb of Nafplio and together with the village Merze today Exostis were part of the administrative area of the town of Nafplio Venetian records of the time stated that Aria had 34 private homes and 110 collapsed public houses These numbers coincide with the ecclesiastical census of 1696 according to which there were 32 houses In other census data reported by the French historian and consul Poukevile Aria in 1814 had 70 inhabitants During the years of the revolution of 1821 Aria was a camping place for the besiegers of Nafplio The end of the revolution met Aria with 145 inhabitants the first official census Othonas 1834 In the census Aria with the villages Tirynthis Koutsi Katsigkri Monastery Karakalas and Kofini constituted the Municipality of Trynthidos TYRINTHA Later the area of Aria played an important role in the revolution of February 1 1862 against the absolutism of King Othona In Aria but also at the surrounding hills of the Prophet Elia and Papafena major battles between the rebels and government forces took place culminating in the Battle of Aria 1 March 1862 were the hero artillery lieutenant Sp Diovouniotis were killed defending the source water Today this part is memorial in his honor Attractions in Aria The view The visitor of Aria has a unique view of almost half Argolida plains Apart from Palamidi and Nafplio lying stretched before him Mpourtzi is also visible which protected the harbor of Nafplio Even Argos is visible to Aria the ancient acropolis Larissa Tiryns with the Cyclopean walls the northern tip of the Argolida Gulf with ancient Lerna and adjacent Kivérion where the summer residences of Franks de la Ross were rulers of Athens and Nafplion The Kanathos source Many authors argue that the source of Martian identified with ancient Kanatho source in which the goddess Hera bathed and reacquired virginity Formerly abundant water run to the sea but today it runs fewer and only flows during the winter season The Holly Monastery Southwest of Aria and within half a mile lies the Holy Monastery of Aria which is dedicated to the life Containing Fount The monastery is a shining example of Byzantine architecture rather of the 11th century and it has been erected on the ruins of ancient temple Many members of the ancient temple have been incorporated into the building of the universal while at the back side of the building someone can see even today columns and capitals of the ancient temple in soil In the monastery there is a water source since ancient times Τhe memorial of Sp Diovouniotis The monument of the hero Lieutenant Artillery Sp Diovouniotis located near the place of his

  • Pirgiotika
of the villagers lead in Arcadia Half of the inhabitants came from Pirgaki Arcadia near Vitina hence how the name Pirgiotika derives and the other half from the village Roino of Tripoli Arcadians lowered during the summers at Himadia to graze their flocks The area of Nafplio was ideal because it had food and water for animals In 1870 one landslide of Pirgaki in Arcadia took place and destroyed too many homes For this reason some shepherds began to descend permanently at Pyriotika and some in Meligala Messinias The descent was gradual as they say again and after their first attempt to settle in Tolo Tolo however as the older people tell had neither grass nor animals and wood for firewood So it turned to Nafplio yelling about Tolo in this place we will take only saltiness Then they settled around the current square building makeshift shacks Each year 2 3 families from Arcadia came to settle in Nafplio and were allowed to graze their animals they also had to rent stanotopia as Ms Sophia Traka president of the Educational and Cultural Association Pirgiotika the St Georgios clearly describes Residents of Pirgiotika are tightly linked to the first place of their origin Each year on the Feast of All Saint celebration they attend at Pirgaki where at the chapel of St John they have made a gift of a picture of St George and make their supplication In addition every year they go to Roino village of Arcadia at the Church of St George A custom that had been maintained up until recently is the weighing of young children in the church of St George The more the weight of the child was the more the offer of money from family to the church would have been Central Square Village
