    a department of the Institute for the Management of Information Systems of the Athena Research centre Digital curation encompasses a set of activities aiming at the production of high quality dependable digital assets their organisation archiving and long term preservation and the generation of added value from digital assets by means of resource based knowledge elicitation To ensure the adequate capture of the context of digital resources and their subsequent creative and effective use the DCU adopts a multidisciplinary approach which considers the full lifecycle of digital assets such as records digital surrogates and scholarly scientific datasets This approach favours a multi faceted analysis of issues and combined use of methods techniques and tools from the fields of informatics especially areas such as knowledge representation and management knowledge extraction ontology engineering multimedia data management Web technologies digital libraries workflow management management and decision sciences especially areas such as workflow analysis reliability analysis and cost benefit analysis library science and archives management material culture studies museology and communications epistemology and law Digital curation services are envisaged as a main mechanism of ensuring the preservation of the evidential function of records as the vocabularies methods and frames of reference in science and

    added value services and new uses for the resources These processes are 1 Appraisal involving the process of developing criteria and selecting resources that may become part of subsequent curation processes 2 Ingesting involving the digital recording of image sound text and data digitizing of analog recordings on various physical carriers and importing digital resources from other sources including repositories 3 Classification indexing and cataloguing producing logical indexes for information management and most importantly subject indexes and indexes related to the intended or possible uses of digital resources 4 Knowledge enhancement concerning the real world entities situations and events represented by digital resources their wider context and domain and digital resources themselves 5 Presentation publication and dissemination i e the process of generating new artefacts scientific scholarly artistic etc from existing primary or secondary digital resources 6 User experience related to resource use and interaction between users and resources as well the effects of this interaction 7 Repository management concerning actual centralized or distributed or virtual repositories and including access mechanisms and 8 Preservation safeguarding against risks to longevity related either to physical causes or to technological evolution These processes of digital resource lifecycle management rely on three supporting processes

    knowledge representation of information in a number of domains The need to ensure adequate representation and long term access to digital information as its context of use changes and to counter the risk of repositories becoming unfit for use data mortuaries introduces a grand challenge for digital curation research to develop the conceptual and technological tools necessary for maintaining and adding value to a trusted body of digital information for current and future use through the active questioning dynamic co evolution and adequate knowledge representation ofits epistemic and pragmatic content and context According to the approach adopted by the Digital Curation Unit this grand challenge requires the adoption of specific research strategies a lifecycle approach to the representation of curated information objects as these evolve in interaction with changing designated communities adoption of event centric methodologies to represent adequately the structure of digital information life events a broader notion of digital curation actors including those involved in the production public communication and utilisation of knowledge a fundamental cross disciplinary scope in research methodologies so as to cater adequately for differences in digital curation requirements between diverse scientific and functional business social economic contexts of use Such strategies adopted by the
