business reality as well it is clear that human intervention and ratification will always be needed It is not possible for managers to accept that a machine is making decisions that have a direct financial impact good or bad even if theory says these decisions have solid footing Another problem has to do with the very definition of rules to express what is binding to the parties involved and what are the penalties depending on the exceptions Coming up with the sheer terminology for a task like this is a huge thing by itself The real world i e non digital legal system took hundreds of years to establish the relevant nomenclature for business law and I guess there are still significant gaps becoming larger as the world and business itself changes Forming digital representations of real world terminology and metrics which sometimes are abstract enough to require arbitration in court is a very challenging task Persuading managers to accept systems that make use of them is probably impossible Then comes the issue of trust and trusted 3rd parties A non automated static i e manually managed SLA for digital services is easier in the sense that the parties involved agree a priori on the tools metrics and exact numbers to use for the specific use case Although it might be possible to define a one fits all referee for generic SLA compliance monitoring it still looks like the average manager does not accept the jurisdiction of an external monitoring entity for making financial decisions that affect his her business Then there are also the reflections of technical negotiation issues onto automated dynamic SLAs The network is an unreliable medium for transferring information Message queues are useful but they only guarantee delivery of a message they cannot do anything about totally dumb agents which assume that sending a message means the other end received it immediately or almost immediately Truth is the message might be received with a significant delay by that time the agreement offer or the agreement document itself may be useless for the receiving party After all automated SLAs are build for a highly dynamic world of services where the landscape changes from one minute to the next Timestamping is not a solution but we do have GPS after all so it can be mitigated to some extent The above are only some of the problems just to point out that direct application of real world contracts on the digital world is not straight forward The last word must always belong to a manager just like the real world At least for the time being noone accepts that this last word belongs to a computer system It makes sense but it is still a pity search Also available at I have a second blog where I m posting songs and comments on artwork that I like Feel free to drop by Play it again Sam There s a twitter account too if you wish to follow Blogs

solid device with a perfect sensible interface I could handle it in one hand as I was walking or even driving when in need to make that urgent phone call without looking at the phone but just clicking on a button or two Granted there was no WiFi GPS or other such recent goodies but I ve been using it happily until a few days ago My only regret was the looks it was fat and ugly ish with that big external antenna Almost an embarrassment these days So I thought it was time I move forward time to buy a new smartphone My requirements where Embedded hardware keyboard If possible monoblock i e no slide out WiFi GPS 3G Decent camera anything more than VGA is fine Doing video Using an OS with proven record Possible to sync with MacOS addressbook calendar etc Costing less than an arm and a leg i e not what I had paid for that Treo On top of this I wanted to avoid Windows Mobile if possible I know they are better than they used to be but I m still biased I was sceptical about going for PalmOS again PalmOS has not seen major innovation like it used to for many many years now only bug fixing releases On the same time interfaces have gone a long way forward see iPhone and PalmOS is stuck to how it looked in 2003 or so I can live with the slide out keyboard of G1 but Android is still in its infancy and I ve learned to avoid first releases of anything RIM Blackberries are popular in the US but from what I saw the add on software options from ISVs are limited I need something that can be heavily extended Finally there are a few non mainstream phones running Linux variants but as I have also learned the hard way you have to stick with mainstream in such cases if you want to get enough software to customise your phone to your exact liking So at the end of the day my only option was the Nokia E71 running S60 I had never used a Symbian phone before although I was the owner of a Psion Revo that s how I found out about the abundance of applications principle back then SymbianOS was nothing close to mainstream although the 5MX was considered a business man s dream I thought however that right now Symbian is running on most of the smartphones out there something like 50 according to a study I read recently and have no quotation for Therefore it should be great and do everything right No I paid those sweet hundreds of euros went back home and started playing with it I knew I was not getting a touch screen and was willing to accept it assuming that S60 provides smart ways to avoid too many keystrokes Gravely wrong So here s a list of what frustrates me and please let

understand its structure and fill it in Apart from making this specific task far too easy for me Alistair Cockburn has managed in this book to set apart the various concepts and ideas which must be materialized before implementing or customizing an application Use cases Requirements Test cases etc There s a fine level of formality and granularity that a use case description needs to have and there are no patterns for that other than the author s intuition about what the audience can provide solid replies to One doesn t fit all and the author makes a good job pointing this out and offering advice on coming up with what is the fittest under specific circumstances A highly recommended book search Also available at I have a second blog where I m posting songs and comments on artwork that I like Feel free to drop by Play it again Sam There s a twitter account too if you wish to follow Blogs that I read Andy Edmonds blog dds Blogs are like opinions Everybody has one Broadband Prime Past midnight thoughts iterator Archives April 2014 1 October 2013 1 September 2013 1 May 2013 1 January 2013 1 February 2012 1 December 2011 1 October 2011 1 June 2011 1 May 2011 2 February 2011 2 January 2011 2 November 2010 1 October 2010 1 September 2010 1 August 2010 1 July 2010 1 June 2010 2 May 2010 6 April 2010 4 March 2010 3 February 2010 5 January 2010 9 December 2009 2 November 2009 3 October 2009 4 September 2009 2 August 2009 1 July 2009 1 May 2009 3 April 2009 4 March 2009 4 January 2009 3 December 2008 3 November 2008 8 October 2008 5 September 2008 3 August 2008 1 July 2008
