    Lykopoulou Address Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Faculty of Philosophy School of Psychology Registrar s Office Administration Building Κ Karatheodori 2nd floor 54124 Thessaloniki Greece Τ 30 2310 997304 F 30 2310 995175 E http www psy auth gr en Founded in 1993 the School of Psychology has a worldwide reputation for high quality teaching and research Initially being part of the School of Philosophy Pedagogy and Psychology the School of Psychology was granted autonomous status in the academic year 1993 94 pursuant to the Presidential Decree 152 93 Its curriculum was closely related to that of the School of Philosophy which was founded in 1964 65 as one of the Schools of the Faculty of Philosophy and ceased to operate in 1971 72 Professor Vasilis Tatakis who taught Systematic Philosophy ardently supported that psychology was a separate discipline and that relevant courses and philosophy courses should be taught separately Professor Tatakis committed himself to founding the School of Psychology It was by his initiative that the Regular Chair in General Psychology was founded Professor Lampros Housiadas became the first holder of the Chair in 1965 It was only a matter of time before the School of Psychology was granted autonomous

    and functioning according to the founding law of 1931 which provided for an Institute of Foreign Languages and Literatures annexed to the Faculty of Philosophy During this early transition period and until 1982 the School operated under the supervision of the presiding Director of the British Council in Thessaloniki as well as of a three person Supervisory Committee from the Faculty of Philosophy Due to changes in education laws Reform Bill 1268 1982 the School οf English along with the Schools of French German and Italian was granted autonomous status equal to that of the other Schools in the Faculty of Philosophy This statutory change marked the beginning of a process of academic and administrative restructuring and modernization with the originally unified School being divided into two the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics and that of English and American Literature which itself was soon in 1987 to divide into the Departments of English Literature and Culture and American Literature and Culture This restructuring in turn brought about greater specialization in the subjects taught in the School of English as the curriculum was reorganized to include a balance of general core subjects on the one hand and more specialized subjects on the other Students were now offered the opportunity to develop their own interests by selecting from a range of elective modules from the three different Departments as well as from a limited number of courses in related areas from other Schools in the Faculty The number of subjects offered increased even further after the new Department of Translation and Intercultural Studies was founded in 2003 The programme of graduate studies has been in operation since 1995 providing specialization in the different fields of study covered by the four Departments Among the numerous and various aims of the programme of

    of German Language and Literature of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in 1960 and is one of the eight schools that constitute the Faculty of Philosophy in the AUTh The main aims of the School are To offer the foundation in acquiring scientific knowledge on the wide spectrum of Linguistics as well as to instill the ability in students to employ this knowledge for theoretical and empirical linguistic research To present and promote the German cultural approach to criticism the methodology and the ideology pervading the analysis of literature and the diachronic overview of their culture often by comparing the above with the Greek literature and culture as well as others To provide graduates with the theoretical practical and teaching tools the German language as well as the translation process is taught both by means of conventional modes of instruction and also by employing Information Technology and audiovisual media The School aims to hatch young scientists with advanced and profound knowledge on the subjects taught in order for them to have both the necessary credentials to teach German as a foreign language but also a strong theoretical background critical thought and the necessary methodological tools for research at a more advanced and or cross scientific level The school also aims to help students become familiar with intercultural studies The language employed throughout the courses both during the instruction and for the assignments is mainly German The School of German offers A BA degree in German Language and Literature after the completion of four 4 academic years of study with two specialisations Linguistics Teaching and Literature and Culture The Postgraduate Studies Program is divided in two specialisations in Linguistics Teaching and in German Literature and Culture The Postgraduate Studies Program is organised in two cycles a a Master s

    was appointed professor of Mathematics Oth Pylarinos 1903 1990 was appointed professor of Theoretical Mechanics F Vasileiou 1894 1986 and I Gratsiatos were appointed senior lecturers in Mathematics and N Kritikos left the School as he was transferred to the National Technical University of Athens The teaching members mentioned above focused on Mathematics Analysis being deeply influenced by the corresponding French school vector methods in Theoretical Mechanics and to a certain extent on Differential Geometry In 1934 upon a relevant recommendation of Varopoulos the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was divided into two Schools a the School of Physics and Mathematics and b the School of Agriculture and Forestry The first degrees were awarded in April 1933 while the number of students enrolling kept rising Although staff continued to be appointed to the School of Mathematics such as I Xanthakis 1904 1994 to the position of professor and I Anastassiadis 1912 1988 to the position of senior lecturer the development of the School was thwarted during the occupation period because of the turmoil that the country was in A significant number of its students were even executed or killed while fighting to liberate Greece When the German troops left Greece at the end of October 1944 Pylarinos who was then Rector of the Aristotle University managed to successfully deal with the difficult task of restructuring the School of Mathematics Students started getting back to their studies and the School grew in popularity and size This was the period when M Brikas 1896 1981 and I Anastassiadis were appointed professors to the School In the meantime research trends changed and the interests of the professors of the School focused on different areas thus the curriculum was reorganized to include courses in Differential and Integral Calculus and in Probability and Statistics It took more than twenty years before the School of Mathematics was reorganized again By 1969 the School had changed to a great extent with regard to its teaching personnel and had grown in size Research and teaching activities were rationalized and the curriculum was reorganized to meet the needs of the time The research activities carried out by N Oikonomidis who taught Complex Functions K Lakkis who taught Algebra N Stefanidis who taught Geometry G Georganopoulos who taught Differential Equations and E A Iliopoulou who taught Topology were radical and pioneering in furthering mathematical studies in Greece When Varopoulos passed away 1957 and Pylarinos left the School 1966 it was I Anastassiadis who contributed greatly to the development of the School of Mathematics Anastassiadis also served as rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the academic year 1975 1976 At the end of the 1970s the School of Mathematics was ready to embrace changes and focus on applied mathematics Newly appointed professors to the School who specialized in applied mathematics helped reorganize the curriculum to include new subjects Professor S Kounias contributed greatly to this restructuring before he was transferred to the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens The
