  • Aristotle University History Archive | ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI
    established at the Faculty of Philosophy during the first years of its operation The archive material was classified and catalogued by the Professor of Modern Greek History Apostolos Vakalopoulos a few decades later The archive is housed in a special room at the Library of Modern and Contemporary History on the fourth floor of the new building of the Faculty of Philosophy The collections either donated or bought include original historical documents copies of documents or manuscripts newspapers history maps microfilms as well as rare documents from various archives and libraries in Greece and abroad related to modern and contemporary Greek history In particular the History Archive of the University of Thessaloniki contains pages from the newspaper Hermes and other newspapers of Thessaloniki published from 1876 to 1901 printed statutes regulations council reports reports of the Charitable Society the Society of the Friends of Education and other education institutions as well as of hospitals and public welfare societies unions and associations of Thessaloniki of the 1872 1917 period photographs of manuscripts and documents from libraries and archives of Mount Athos Athens the Kapodistrian Archive documents from the Mamuka Archive of the 1822 1835 period original unbound documents from Syros and Siatista from the 17th to the 20th century private documents from Thasos and Macedonia of the 1797 1904 period as well as 6 Turkish documents and a decree of June 7th 1810 of Sultan Mahmud the 2nd regarding the island of Thasos Maps manuscripts and documents The Archive also contains about 100 historical and geophysical maps of Europe the Ottoman Empire and Greek areas dating from medieval and modern times and 170 volumes of photographed rare travel texts and history dissertations of the 16th 19th century There is also a significant number of microfilms regarding manuscripts documents and rare printed

    Student Unions You are here Home Aristotle University Orchestra The Orchestra of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in February 1999 based on the belief that music could provide the faculty members and students of the Aristotle University with the opportunity to build closer ties with each other and with the city of Thessaloniki All members of the Aristotle University responded to the call expressing their genuine interest in founding the Orchestra Within four months about forty students from all Schools of the Aristotle University joined the Orchestra Today the Orchestra consists of more than seventy members and it keeps attracting the interest of outstanding faculty members students and citizens in general The Orchestra performs concerts with programmes including symphonic repertoire from Bach to the present participating in the events organized by the University annually on October 28th March 25th during Christmas the student week celebrations etc Moreover the Orchestra cooperates with the Choirs of the University performing pre classical classical and modern repertoire The Orchestra has given concerts in many Greek cities and has participated in various Greek and international festivals being enthusiastically received from audiences The Orchestra is financially supported by the Aristotle University Property Development and

    has been conducted by Maria Emma Meligopoulou Giannis Mandakas Choir of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Giannis Mandakas Choir of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is part of the Music Department of the Aristotle University Student Club The Choir was founded in 1953 by Giannis Mandakas 1932 1998 with the aim to provide Aristotle University students and young people of Thessaloniki with music knowledge and the opportunity to develop their talents and skills Various initiatives have been taken by the Choir which has contributed greatly to the music scene of Thessaloniki and Greece in general The Choir has also participated in many events held abroad thanks to the support of and actions taken by its founder Since 1990 the Choir has been conducted by Petros Bekiaridis The Choir has also contributed to the development of choral music in Greece It has renewed the repertoire organized seminars promoted recordings of choral music works as well as presented hundreds of choral works mainly of the Renaissance Baroque and contemporary eras to the Greek audience for the first time The Choir aims to continue to carry out such activities The Choir has cooperated with the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra the Athens State Orchestra the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation the Aristotle University Orchestra the Youth Chamber Music Orchestra of Thessaloniki and the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Municipality of Kalamaria It has performed under the direction of Carolos Trikolidis Alkis Baltas Myron Michailidis Dimitris Dimopoulos Antonis Kontogeorgiou Costis Papazoglou Aggelos Philippou etc The Choir has participated in the Athens Festival and in the Demetria Festival and has performed in many Greek cities Moreover the Choir has organized many Greek and International Choir and Orchestra Meetings in Thessaloniki and has participated in choral music concerts recorded and videotaped for broadcast on the radio and television Since 1964 the Choir has been a member of the European Choral Association Europa Cantat It often participates in international festivals and in choral workshops cooperating with other European choirs and orchestras studying and performing international repertoire under the direction of great conductors such as László Heltay Pierre Cao Andras Farcaş Erik van Nevel Edmont Colomer Johann Duyck Tillai Aurél Pierre Calmelet etc The Choir has participated in events in the following cities 2000 Nevers France 2001 Ghent Belgium 2002 Loughborough England 2003 Barcelona Spain 2005 Ghent Belgium 2007 Nevers France 2008 Szczecin Poland 2009 Utrecht the Netherlands 2010 Pécs Hungary 2011 Briançon France For sixty years now supported by the Rector s Council of the Aristotle University and great colleagues the Choir has been providing all members of the University and music lovers of Thessaloniki with the opportunity to use and develop their music talent find out information about important choral works and build closer ties with each other The annual schedule of the Choir includes concerts performed in the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki and other cities in Greece with programmes that include Greek and foreign repertoire Participating in the Choir does not require any special music knowledge just the
