    Student Unions You are here Home Research The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki which consists of 12 Faculties 42 Schools and 289 Laboratories conducts research projects participates in European research programmes and projects cooperates with international institutions and organizations and attracts outstanding researchers from within Greece and abroad The Aristotle University supports research projects in a wide variety of disciplines related to the environment natural and built computing new technologies and nanotechnology telecommunications industrial technologies transport biotechnology biomedicine and health agriculture forestry and fishery education and language history and archaeology social studies and economics The research policy of the Aristotle University focuses on promoting quality and encouraging excellence The principle objective of the quality policy implemented by the Research Committee of the Aristotle University is to ensure that optimal control procedures are applied and specific accreditation systems are used that guarantee high quality research outputs The Committee began implementing a quality policy within the framework of its operational programme when the Special Account for Research Grants S A R G was accredited by the International Organization for Standardization ISO 9001 2000 in November 2002 An excellence policy is also implemented with the aim to encourage the research personnel of the Aristotle

    in compliance with national and European legislation It is responsible for the financial management of research projects and activities carried out at the university The aim of the Special Account is to distribute and manage funds which cover any kind of expenditure and are necessary for research educational training and technological development The Special Account also concerns funds for continuing education projects projects for the provision of scientific technological and artistic services for studies the implementation of tests measurement laboratory tests and analyses for the provision of expert opinions the drawing up of specifications as well as other related services or activities that contribute to linking research and education with industrial production and are provided or carried out by the research personnel of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in collaboration with the academic staff of other institutions The Research Committee is responsible for managing research projects and related activities covering current emerging needs distributing external funds and safeguarding the distinction between research and teaching A number of faculty members elected by the General Assemblies of the Schools which equals the number of the Schools of the Aristotle University attend the plenum meetings of the Research Committee Key responsibilities of the Research Committee include mapping out the research policy of the university and relevant activities accepting approving distributing funds for the implementation of projects drawing up annual economic and research plans and reports ensuring the smooth running of the Special Account The Registrar s Office is the administrative organizational body of the Special Account and its responsibilities include developing management accounting systems to control finances effectively implementing decisions reached by the Research Committee and offering secretarial services submitting proposals and enhancing cooperation with regards to the running and development of the Special Account Implementing a quality policy that helps improve the

    Services LIFE IN AUTH Academic calendar Services Culture Student Unions You are here Home Administration Literally the term administration means management care and direction of affairs institutions and people Public administration aims to meet the needs of society and is bound by law to benefit the public interest In accordance with the Greek Constitution civil servants shall serve the people article 103 The Administration of Higher Education Institutions in Greece consists of a number of individual and collective bodies administrative service units and committees which are governed by the provisions of law enacted by the Greek State focusing on their mission that is the reason they were set up One year after the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded its Administration was established pursuant to Law no 3341 1925 Within a few years the Administration evolved and its services improved meeting the needs of a modern European university The Administration is organized vertically based on the hierarchy of the bodies it consists of and thus the body which is responsible for decision making is at the top of the pyramid It is also organized horizontally based on the nature of the services offered to cover the needs of the university

    assist his work full pofessors or Associate Professors of the University as Deputy Rectors to whom she he delegates specific of her his responsibilities by ruling aproved by the Council The ruling that appoins the deputy rectors determines the order in which they substitute the rector if absent unable or missing for whatever reason The number of the Deputy Rectors is specified in the organizational chart of the University The Senate The Senate is composed of the Rector the Deputy Rectors the Deans of Schools and the heads of Schools one representative of the teaching assistants tutors research fellows one student representative of each School one representative of the Special Teaching Fellows S T F one representative of the Administrative Personnel one representative of the Special Administrative Technical Personnel S A T P and two representatives of the postgraduate students and Special Postgraduate Scholars S P S Representatives of Associate Professors Assistant Professors and Lecturers are also entitled to participate in the Senate The number of these representatives equals 1 3 of the number of the Schools of the University that is neither less than six 6 nor more than the number of the Schools of the University When the number of Schools is more than fifteen 15 two 2 more faculty members of the Schools that have the largest number of faculty members may join the Senate Faculty Each Faculty is divided into Schools some of which cover a single discipline and some a group of related disciplines A Faculty is administered by the General Assembly of the Faculty G A of the Faculty which consists of the members of the General Assemblies of the Faculty s Schools the Deanship which consists of the Dean the Chairs of Schools and one representative of the students of each School and the Dean who is elected for a four year term School Each School offers a broad range of courses in a specific discipline which lead to a degree Each School is committed to encouraging research at the highest possible level and ensuring that its students are given full and comprehensive training A School is administered by the General Assembly of the School G A of the School which consists of the Chair of the School who is a Professor or an Associate Professor appointed for a two year term Faculty members a number of student representatives which equals 50 of the number of Faculty members and representatives of the Special Postgraduate Scholars S P S or postgraduate students the number of which equals 15 of the number of Faculty members who participate in the G A the G A of Foreign Language Schools and the Schools of Physical Education and Sports Sciences are also composed of a number of representatives of the Special Teaching Personnel S T P that equals 10 of the number of Faculty members All Faculty members participate in the G A of the School as long as their number is less than or equal to 30
