  • The Antikythera Mechanism: still a mystery of Greek Astronomy | The Antikythera Mechanism Research Project
Greek Astronomy Publication Type Journal Article Year of Publication 2000 Authors Edmunds Mike and Morgan Philip Journal Title Astronomy Geophysics Volume 41 Pages 8 Start Page 6 10 Abstract A lump of bronze found in a shipwreck a century ago is a fragment of a complex device of gears and scales around 2000 years old Its markings suggest it was used for astronomical and calendrical calculations But uncertainty remains over its purpose was it astronomical astrological or educational Here we summarize what is known about the Antikythera Mechanism and reconstruct its workings We also examine its context in the Greek world of the first century BC and suggest that its purpose might be astrological more than astronomical The existence of the Mechanism shows the sophistication of thought and manufacture available at this time We speculate on the purpose of the device and demonstrate mechanisms that could enable such a device to give planetary positions useful for astrology It could also function as an accurate calendar perhaps for civil holidays or as an orrery DOI 10 1046 j 1468 4004 2000 41610 x Bookmark Search this post with Google Plus One Pinterest Login or register to post comments Rate This Select

  • The Cosmos in the Antikythera Mechanism | The Antikythera Mechanism Research Project
Antikythera Mechanism Publication Type Journal Article Year of Publication 2012 Authors Freeth Tony and Jones Alexander R Journal Title ISAW Papers Volume 4 Abstract The Antikythera Mechanism is a fragmentarily preserved Hellenistic astronomical machine with bronze gearwheels made about the second century B C In 2005 new data were gathered leading to considerably enhanced knowledge of its functions and the inscriptions on its exterior However much of the front of the instrument has remained uncertain due to loss of evidence We report progress in reading a passage of one inscription that appears to describe the front of the Mechanism as a representation of a Greek geocentric cosmology portraying the stars Sun Moon and all five planets known in antiquity Complementing this we propose a new mechanical reconstruction of planetary gearwork in the Mechanism incorporating an economical design closely analogous to the previously identified lunar anomaly mechanism and accounting for much unresolved physical evidence URL http dl dropbox com u 17002562 isaw papers 4 preprint isaw papers 4 html Bookmark Search this post with Google Plus One Pinterest Login or register to post comments Rate This Select rating Poor Okay Good Great Awesome Your rating None Average 5 3 votes Tweets
